Sports betting (live + upcoming), casino (live + table games), virtual and e-sports all in one place: That’s Marathon Bet. There’s a wide selection of events, low odds and equally impressive graphics in their casino. The premier league has just started and they already have 200+ markets on each event. Interesting. One thing though, Marathonbet isn’t designed for the Kenyan Market and you will quickly realise that they’re putting too much emphasis on the casino aspect; Something that doesn’t have a huge local following. More in this Marathonbet review.
Marathonbet at a glance
Having been founded in 1997, Marathonbet is one of the older bookies you’ll work with. They were originally based in Russia but moved base to the UK where they are licensed by the UK gambling commission as Marathon Bet UK. They have a reasonable number of brick and mortar betting shops in UK – just like we used to have Betin and Mozzartbet shops. They are licensed in Spain and in Curacao too. All their operations are carried out in Brighton, England.
Marathonbet payment methods
They’re currently accepting credit cards (visa, MasterCard, maestro) and e-wallets (skill, Neteller, Webmoney, ecopay) All deposits are free and instant. E-wallet withdrawals can take up to a day to be processed and you cannot withdraw by Visa. Credit and Debit Card withdrawals are processed in 3 to 5 days.
Marathonbet customer service
There are no customer care reps for the Kenyan market. I had inquired on whether they have m-pesa (hint: they don’t) and the customer care rep got back in just 40 seconds. Fastest response EVER. We’re used to bookies taking days to get back.
Innovative sports quiz
Think of it as sports betting except that you’re predicting events in one match. One match is showcased and you’re supposed to predict various outcomes in this event. This bet slip is set as a quiz where you’re expected to answers questions like how many corners will either team have? What will be the correct score and which team will kick off the match?
Did you know: The home team doesn’t always kick off the match. Captains of both teams toss a coin and the winner kicks off. Learnt this the hard way after losing on this market at Betin. It sucked losing a bet in the zeroth minute you know.
All active marathon players get a complimentary ticket to this quiz. Another ticket is issued to players who stake at least 10 Euros on the match in discussion. €100 000 (just under Kes 13M at the time of this writing) is the reward on this quiz.
Access current team standings, league tables and past H2H stats straight from their website. We can see that Arsenal is at the top of the league, they were lucky to take the first match in this season’s kick-off. It won’t be long
Either way, their stats are no match for the Flashscore App. The app shares stats that gamblers will find genuinely helpful – like how each team performs at the start of the season. Please look at their Tottenham vs Everton overview.
This is their version of the Fantasy Premier League [-1] but with a twist. You will be making a virtual team here by combining players from two real teams. Points are awarded based on how players perform (in real matches). The only difference is that this time you’re playing for real money and not for bragging rights. Here are the rules.
This bookie doesn’t have Kenyans in mind
There are no M-Pesa deposits/withdrawals. All their markets are designed for the European market. Mucina Kigoro had the same query too. The Euro is the default currency and this isn’t the best currency for mental conversion to the Kenyan Shilling you know.
The Marathonbet platform
Games of the week are highlighted on the homepage. Spreads (odds) for the 1×2 market are shown for each market but you’ll have to click the match to access other markets such as the HTFT and the handicaps. Marathon bet has a casino to and the homepage has links to it too. In the settings tab, you get to choose the preferred odds format and other preferences.
There’s an advanced bet feature that I haven’t seen elsewhere. This isn’t a credit feature. Advancebet lets you stake with potential winnings from running bets. Of course, this will depend on how the running bet is proceeding. If you had predicted that there will be at least 3 goals (OV2.5) and the game is already at 2-1, you can use these winnings to wager again.
Welcome bonus and promotions.
With the exception of the advance bet, all their other bonuses, free bets and promotions are exclusive to greyhound/horse races.
Quality of odds
They have the tightest odds ever and will rank last among all the bookies we’ve reviewed.
For a fair coin toss; Marathonbet will give 1.75 for the head or tail. Unbelievable. Compare this to Dafabet’s 1.95 on either side
Here’s our guide comparing odds across multiple bookies.
€250,000 is the maximum winnings a customer could have in a 24 hours period. “Lower limits are applicable to individual events” though there’s no clarification on the same.
There are two apps; one for sports betting and the other one for the casino. Both apps are available on Android and iOS.
Blackberry and Windows mobile users have to access their services through their website. It’s fully responsive and looks great even on smaller devices.
I give Marathonbet a 3 star. It’s great that they don’t charge a 20% tax unlike all other bookies but the lack of M-Pesa is a deal breaker.
Frequently asked questions
Is Marathonbet available in Kenya?
Yes. Players from Kenya can create accounts and wager. They were not charging a 20% tax at the time of this writing (Sept 2020). However, they do not have M-Pesa deposits or withdrawals. Credit card is the easiest way to deposit and any ATM will work. Their odds are the lowest we’ve seen though.
Does Marathonbet limit accounts?
Yes. Frequent complaints have been made over Marathonbet limiting accounts
I’m Kanyi Muturi and am from Tabuga, a small village in Nakuru. I have been following all sports since I was a kid and have been interested in the gambling side of sports since I was in high school. It took me a little while to get a grasp on all of the different gambling terminology and understand how confusing and complicated it can all seem when you first start.
Are you a professional gambler?
I am a successful gambler. But make no mistake about it: I’m a long-time recreational sports bettor. I’m not a professional gambler. I’m not claiming to be a professional gambler. I’ve never, to my recollection, even been acquainted with a professional gambler. And far be it from me to make the preposterous claim that following my advice will turn you into a professional gambler. It ain’t about that. Not here it ain’t. I just want to teach you a new form of recreation, a fun new pastime in what can sometimes be an unfun life.
