Because of the Finance Act 2025, which really started to kick in as of February this year, the government has switched to a “wallet flow” system. The headline change is the old 20% withholding tax on net winnings is no longer in place – which sounds like a win, right? However, the new system spreads out the tax across your entire betting cycle.
- Every time you transfer money from your M-Pesa or Airtel Money to your betting wallet, the government takes a 5% hit upfront – so if you deposit KES 1,000, your betting balance will now be KES 950.
- And when you decide to cash out, the government now takes a flat 5% on the total amount leaving the wallet.
