Betting Tips

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 continues on Sunday with Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Egypt, and DR Congo all being in action as they seek for a place in the quarter-finals.

TopbetsKE picks the top five betting fixtures you can place your money on plus an extra two tips for our readers.

Equatorial Guinea v Guinea

Surprise package Equatorial Guinea will be hoping to continue with their blistering start to life in the competition when they take on neighbors Guinea for a place in the last eight.

Having topped a group containing Nigeria and hosts Ivory Coast, they will be looking to push into the latter stages despite a tough tie against Egypt or DR Congo awaiting the victor in the quarter-finals.

Guinea are out to end their curse of losing all six knockout games they have played at the Cup of Nations, despite finishing second in 1976 – when the final round was a second group stage. A draw with Cameroon and a victory over Gambia were enough for them to qualify as a third-placed side for this stage.

Team News

Juan Micha has stuck with a consistent selection for Equatorial Guinea’s three games so far and will surely stick with the same 4-3-3 setup for this tie. Top scorer Nsue will continue up top after his brace in the stunning 4-0 win over Ivory Coast put him on five goals as the top scorer at AFCON.

In-form Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy managed an hour on his return from injury for Guinea’s defeat to Senegal, so he should once again get the nod in Abidjan.

Egypt v DR Congo

Egypt and DR Congo remain the only teams in the last 16 yet to win a match in the ongoing tournament.

A trio of 2-2 draws saw the Pharaohs edge Ghana and Mozambique in Group B, while their opponents here enjoyed a similar route to somehow finish second over Zambia and Tanzania. Something though will have to give as one of them will have to go home at this stage.

Egypt will be without Mohamed Salah who returned to his parent club Liverpool for treatment after picking up an injury in their second group game. DR Congo, twice Cup of Nations champions, have only won one knockout tie at the tournament since 1998 and will see this as an opportunity to break that knockout jinx.

Team News

Along with Salah’s absence, the Pharaohs were hit by midfielder Emam Ashour being ruled out of this tie on Wednesday after he suffered a concussion trying to do an overhead kick in training. Goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy is also out of action after an injury in the dramatic group finale against Cape Verde.

For Congo, Cedric Bakambu may return to help out DR Congo’s toothless frontline, which failed to score against Tanzania in their final group game. Centre-back Henock Inonga missed that game with a head injury and it is not clear if he will be fit for the game.
