On the lower end of the table, Le Havre will be in Ligue One for another season, with Reims having to go through the playoffs to ensure they maintain their top-flight status. Here are the major talking points on the last day of the 2024/25 season.

Record goals scored on the last day of the season

A staggering 38 goals were scored across the league, the highest single-day total in Ligue 1 since 17 May 2008, when 43 goals were recorded.

Saturday’s outburst came as teams scrambled for Champions League and European competition spots, leading to wide-open play and relentless attacking football. OGC Nice and Olympique de Marseille played key roles in the goal fest, with six goals scored in their respective matches.

Le Havre save season as Reims set for Playoffs

Le Havre will have to thank Abdoulaye Touré for saving their season as his 96th-minute penalty preserved their top-flight status after coming from behind to beat 10-man RC Strasbourg Alsace 3-2 at the Stade de la Meinau on the last day of the season. Le Havre entered the last day under immense pressure but managed to snatch safety on the road against Strasbourg, who themselves were vying for a European spot.

Meanwhile, Reims face a nerve-wracking week ahead with their L1-L2 play-off against Metz and a French Cup final looming. Their president’s focus on off-field disputes, particularly targeting Lyon’s Thiago Almada, raised eyebrows as the team’s survival hung in the balance.

Mason Greenwood matches Dembele’s goal tally

While PSG won the league ages ago, the fight for the golden boot has been some enticing battle with Mason Greenwood (Marseille) and Ousmane Dembele (PSG) all finishing with 21 goals. The PSG man, however, was officially awarded the Golden Boot for having scored fewer penalties.

Greenwood netted twice on Marseille’s last day of the season in their 4-2 win over Rennes and had a chance for a hat-trick from the spot. However, he missed the penalty, staying on 21 goals. In what was his debut campaign in France, the Englishman is already being linked with a move away from Marseille in the summer.
