How do betting odds work
Let’s use a real-life example to break it down – say a match between Arsenal and Manchester United on 25th Jan 2026. Betika happens to be offering odds on it.
They’ve got odds for Both Teams to Score (GG) coming in at 1.83 and No Both Teams to Score (No GG) at 2.02.
Now, here’s a scenario where you bet on both events at the same time. So you stake KES 1,000 on GG at 1.83 and the same amount on No GG at 2.02.
No matter what happens, one of these bets is going to lose and the other’s going to win.
- If both teams do end up scoring, GG will be the winner and you’ll get KES 1,000 x 1.83 = KES 1,830, while No GG will be a KES 1,000 loser, and you’ll be left with a total return of KES 830.
- On the other hand, if they don’t both score, then No GG will be the winner and you’ll get KES 1,000 x 2.02 = KES 2,020. GG will be the loser and you’ll have a return of KES 1,020. Either way, you’re going to be out of pocket.
The vig is the bookmaker’s profit margin for itself, which is built right into the odds. What this means is that the total implied probability from those odds is always over 100% – so you’ll never find a perfect set of odds that guarantees a profit by betting on all outcomes. In this example, 1 ÷ 1.83 comes out at about 54.64% and 1 ÷ 2.02 is roughly 49.5%. Add these together and the total implied probability comes out at 104.14%. So, that extra 4.14% is the bookmaker’s margin – its vig.
