Spanish LaLiga Season 2024/25
Week 8 Review
The fairytale is over! Hansi Flick’s iteration of Barcelona have finally lost after seven impeccable games. They were comprehensively beaten by Osasuna in their match week 8 fixture but still showed signs of the brilliance that led them to seven straight wins in the league.
However, on the other side of Spain’s major rivalry, on-field performances and incidents made sure that Barcelona’s lead at the top was not drastically reduced. Fans are still reeling from a very interesting week and are already looking forward to the new one.
In the meantime, here is the catch-up of the best bits of action and stories from matchday week eight of the 2024/25 LaLiga EA Sports season.
Villarreal continue unprecedented charge as Girona’s plummet continues
When Girona did the impossible to grab a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the 2024/25 season, it sparked something in many teams. Villarreal looks to be the only team acting on the adrenaline rush they got from watching the lowly Catalan club climb to unprecedented heights as their performances in 2024/25 have been brilliant.
They may have lost by a large scoreline at home to Barcelona but they have shown that they are the only team that can be as exciting as them. This is evident in their current league position, achieved after thrashing Las Palmas 3 – 1 in the last match of week 8. They are now third on the table behind Real Madrid – whose aura and history have kept them going in the season – and Barcelona, whose loss to Osasuna is considered a slip-up due to the heavy rotation that Hansi Flick employed in the game as he saved players for their UEFA Champions League clash in midweek.
Girona, on the other hand, continue to struggle with getting results. The new crop of players have taken a longer time to gel under Michel and after another draw, they are now 13th on the log and in danger of losing out of European places at the end of the season. It is still early days. However, one cannot help but notice the trend of exceptional small clubs losing their best players after a fantastic season and returning to mediocrity afterwards happening with Girona.
Real Betis continues their modest fight – that thing they do every season where they show enough promise but not enough to trouble the real fighters. Their 1 – 0 win against Espanyol is evidence of this. They will have to step up, however, as Osasuna and Mallorca are trying to tow the Girona line this season as well. Both clubs are ahead of Betis on the table after week 8 following wins against Barcelona and Real Valladolid.

Top Scorers
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski still leads the chart with seven goals despite failing to add to his tally on matchday 8. Villarreal’s Ayoze Perez is next with six goals as well, despite not also scoring on matchday 8 thanks to him being left out of the squad for rotation purposes. Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis), Kylian Mbappe (France) and Raphinha (Barcelona) are next with five goals. It is important to note that Mbappe, one of the odds-on favourites for the Pichichi, is currently injured, giving everyone on this list a head start.
