Spanish LaLiga Season 2024/25

Week 19 Review

Welcome back to the best league in the world!

The players are well rested after enjoying their holidays with their families and are now ready to lead the way in European club football with impeccable displays that makes the Spanish LaLiga the best leagues in the world.

Unfortunately, fans could not witness the stars of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club Bilbao and Mallorca in LaLiga action because of the Spanish Super Cup which was happening in Saudi Arabia, but they got to witness a host of other brilliant displays, many of which point to an interesting second half of the 2024/25 LaLiga EA Sports season.

Let us run through some of the best bits of action from week 19.

Slow game week across board but Atlético remain top

Los Rojiblancos went into the winter break at the top of the table thanks to Barcelona dropping more points, and have started the second half of the season in the same strong fashion.

Julian Alvarez scored their lone goal in their clash with Osasuna in week 19 and sent fans into a frenzied celebration at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium. The Argentina international struggled a bit to adapt to the way of life in LaLiga but he has now won his manager, Diego Simeone’s full trust to be the starting striker of the team despite competing with Alexander Sørloth, who was beaten to last season’s Pichichi award on the last day of the season by former Girona man Artem Dovbyk.

Sørloth still leads the way in league goals at Atlético Madrid but the rest of the league is now well aware that the 2021 winners also have another sharpshooter in the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, Alvarez.

Fans were welcomed back to LaLiga by Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo, whose fierce competition for points ended in a 2 – 1 victory for Vallecano, the home side. It was a match that had everything, including a red card which we had not seen in a few games. It was also the highest-scoring game of week 19 (together with the Las Palmas-Getafe match). Both games were the only ones to see a team score more than one goal as other teams took it slow in front of goal despite not compromising on quality of football.

As fans anticipate the return of the Spanish Super Cup participants in week 20, we also wonder what Barcelona have in store for the rest of the league following their triumph in the mini tournament held in Saudi Arabia. Hansi Flick’s last words before the winter break were, “I promise we will fight for everything”. Are we about to see the biggest comeback in a while in LaLiga?

Time will tell!
