Week 35 Review

Real Madrid have been declared champions and have already had their title parade. Right now, they are just playing to see out the season and for bragging rights.

Still, they thrashed Granada, who, despite being relegated thanks to Las Palmas losing to Mallorca earlier, could not put in a good fight for their fans.

The afternoon’s Madrid XI was a second-string side as Carlo Ancelotti showed that he is focused on giving his main core enough rest ahead of their UEFA Champions League final clash.

This and more happened in week 35. Let us review the best bits of action.

Barcelona and Girona continue yo-yo battle for second place

Real Sociedad continued their abysmal performance against Barcelona on Monday night with another loss to the Catalan giants at their home. Goals from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Raphinha sealed the win for Barcelona, which propelled them to second behind Madrid. Girona’s 2 – 2 away draw at Deportivo Alaves meant that Barcelona’s win took them one point above them.

This is still a fragile position for both teams, who are now battling for bragging rights in Catalonia. After doing the impossible to defeat their bigger city counterparts across two legs this season, the icing on the cake would be to finish above them in the league. Barcelona are not about to allow this, which means there will be another interesting league race in the last few weeks of the 2023/24 LaLiga EA Sports season.

Girona have a tough run, with Villarreal, Valencia and Granada still to come while Barcelona have Almeria, Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla. Fireworks can still be expected from both sides as the season winds down.

Meanwhile, Almeria might be going down but they seem to be playing their best since finding out their fate. Their match against Real Betis was a true classic. Home advantage made the difference for Los Verdiblancos, who eked out a 3 – 2 win after giving up a two-goal lead. The win took them to within seven points of fifth place, thanks to Athletic Club Bilbao’s 2 – 2 draw with Osasuna earlier.

Week 36 begins on Tuesday 14 May, 2024 with champions Real Madrid and third-placed Girona in action. We look forward to an exciting finish to the ongoing season.

Artem Dovbyk did not add to his goal tally so he still leads the chart with 20 goals. Alexander Sørloth scored two goals as Villarreal kept their European hopes alive with a 3 – 2 defeat of Sevilla.
