Football Predictions
Tottenham Hotspur hosts Liverpool in what has been dubbed as the Premier League game of the week.
New manager Ange Postecoglou has yet to taste defeat in 90 minutes in seven games and the entertaining football he’s got Spurs playing won’t come as a surprise to those fans north of the border. A trademark entertaining draw with North London rivals Arsenal last week added to his reputation and this will be another huge test.
Liverpool on the other end was in midweek Carabao Cup action against Leicester City, but Jurgen Klopp rested his big guns for this game in the capital. Klopp’s side have carried on from their strong end to last season and has won five games in a row in the league as well as a Europa League stroll in Austria. They look like they are capable of pushing Manchester City and Arsenal all the way and this will be a big indicator of that.
H2H/Stats
In competitive encounters, Liverpool have faced Tottenham a total of 181 times since their very first meeting in 1909 (Spurs won 1-0). The Reds have come out victorious on 89 occasions, drawing 44 and losing 48.
Liverpool did the double last season in a pair of 4-3 and 2-1 wins in what were entertaining clashes. And Spurs have not beaten Liverpool in their last 12 games which includes a Champions League Final four years ago.
Team News
James Maddison ‘jolted’ his knee in a duel during the North London Derby, and is a minor doubt for the weekend. Fellow new signing Brennan Johnson was another who left the field early in the draw with Arsenal and will be assessed before the game. Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Ryan Sessegnon (thigh) and Bryan Gil (hip) are all likely to miss the weekend clash as they continue their recoveries.
Ivan Perisic remains a long-term absentee, having suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his right knee.
Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the big injury doubt despite returning to training. Thiago Alcantara remains out with the hip injury that has sideline him since last season. Backup right back Conor Bradley is the only other first-team absentee and looks set to be out until November with a back issue. Impressive stand-in performers Joe Gomez and Joel Matip may be forced to drop to the bench, while last season’s hero against Spurs, Jota, will compete with Darwin Nuñez and Cody Gakpo for a role in attack.
Probable Line-Ups
Tottenham XI: Vicario (GK), Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Maddison, Son, Richarlison
Liverpool XI: Alisson (GK) Trent, Konate, van Dijk (c), Robertson, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones, Salah, Nuñez, Diaz
Verdict
While Spurs have been scoring at will, they have been conceding too and they come against a Liverpool side who have goals in their side in plenty. Both teams are on form and predicting a winner might be tricky but they’ll surely be goals.
