Football Predictions

After ascending to the top of the league following their win over Fulham on Sunday, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City welcome West Ham United to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

While they’ve been gliding past teams recently, City who will have two games in hand after the Gunners face Chelsea on Tuesday have had some defensive frailties have been evident in the last few months having kept only two clean sheets in their last 12 top-flight matches. They have however been ruthless in scoring goals and come against a West Ham side against whom they are unbeaten in 14 top-flight matches, winning 11 in the process including a 2-0 success at the London Stadium back in August.

Less than a week after securing a confidence-boosting 4-0 victory away against Bournemouth, West Ham is back down in the dumps following back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Crystal Palace, and with tough fixtures coming up, they will be hoping that teams in the relegation battle lose their matches too if they are to maintain their Premier League status.

The Citizens, who have won their last six meetings with the Hammers at the Etihad, currently boast the best home record in the Premier League having accumulated 43 points from a possible 48 available, while they have won each of their last 24 top-flight games played on a Wednesday; the longest winning run by any team on a specific day in the division’s history.

Recent Meetings:

7/8/22: West Ham 0-2 Man City

15/5/22: West Ham 2-2 Man City

28/11/21: Man City 2-1 West Ham

27/10/21: West Ham 0-0 Man City

27/2/21: Man City 2-1 West Ham

Team News

Man City might miss the services of Nathan Ake and Kevin De Bruyne, with the former still recovering from a hamstring issue and the latter suffering from an unspecified problem that forced him to miss the win over Fulham.

Manuel Akanji has admirably filled in as a makeshift left-back in the last two games in the absence of Ake and could continue in that role alongside fellow defenders Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Ruben Dias.

For West Ham, Kurt Zouma was withdrawn in the first half of the defeat at Palace and the center-back is expected to miss out on Wednesday. Gianluca Scamacca is the only other absentee for the Hammers after undergoing knee surgery, so Michail Antonio and Danny Ings will continue to battle for a center-forward spot.

Probable Line-Ups

Man City XI: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Dias, Akanji; Rodri, Gundogan; Foden, Alvarez, Grealish; Haaland

West Ham XI: Fabianski; Coufal, Kehrer, Aguerd, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice, Paqueta; Bowen, Antonio

As mentioned earlier, Man City has had a tendency of conceding goals recently and while this might give West Ham some hope, they will have to be wary of the Pep Guardiola attack who has been scoring at will. With the title now in sight, there is no stopping City more so at the Etihad where they’ve been brushing aside teams.

Verdict: Man City win/Over 2.5

Anytime Goalscorer

Erling Haaland✅

The Norwegian scored his 50th goal of the season to help Man City beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday, becoming the first English top-flight player to reach half a century of goals across all competitions in 92 years. He will still be depended upon to deliver the goodies and West Ham must have a good plan to contain him if he is to be kept silent in the game.

Julian Alvarez

The Argentine is another player who has shone each time he has been called upon to defend the blue colors of Man City. With De Bruyne a doubt, he should maintain his spot up top with Haaland in what should be a handful for the David Moyes side.
