Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich will be facing reigning European Champions Manchester City in their next pre-season friendly at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Bayern has only played one game so far in preseason where they humiliated Rottach-Egern 27-0 but that won’t be the case when they come up against their former manager Pep Guardiola whose side have played just a game too in their preparations.
City will be upping the tempo in their preparations with this game as it falls between friendlies against Yokohama F Marinos in Tokyo (23 July) and a meeting with Spanish side Atletico Madrid in South Korea (30 July). While they have had a quiet summer in the transfers, the English side has players capable of giving a result that the Spaniard will want on the day.

This will be the fifth summer friendly between these teams in recent years. Bayern won the first two (2-1 in 2013 and 1-0 in 2016), but City took the spoils in the next two (a 3-2 success in 2018 and a 1-0 triumph last year).
They have also met eight times in the Champions League. Bayern have won three of those and City four, with one draw. The English side knocked Bayern out in the quarter-finals en route to glory in 2022/23, winning 3-0 at home and drawing 1-1 in Munich.

Thomas Tuchel will have his first full season at Bayern and the team bought him some important pieces for the squad. South Korean Min-jae Kim arrived from Napoli while Konrad Laimer and Raphael Guerreiro signed as free agents. The biggest speculation surrounds Harry Kane, Bayern had two big offers already turned down by Tottenham. Manuel Neuer, Tarek Buchmann, and Raphael Guerreiro are expected to miss the game through injury.
There has been a snag in the possible transfer of defender Josko Gvardiol from Leipzig. The Croatian defender has been Man City’s top transfer target but the deal seems to be taking too long to be completed so Guardiola will have to be contented with the players he has at his disposal. The club has however captured Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea and he is expected to slot in midfield but won’t have Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez; the latter gearing toward a move to Saudi Arabia. Kevin De Bruyne is injured at the moment.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City is always an intriguing game. Both teams are yet to hit top gear as they are just returning for preseason but this should be another entertaining game that should produce goals.
