Football Predictions

Manchester City will be hosting Arsenal at the Etihad on Wednesday in arguably the biggest game of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Arsenal is currently five points clear above their hosts who are placed second but Pep Guardiola’s team has two games in hand on the North London outfit and having booked their place in the FA Cup Final on Sunday and making it to the semis of the UEFA Champions League, their treble dreams are truly on.

The momentum has been drained from Mikel Arteta’s men following three draws in a row, two of which saw them lead by two goals away from home before a late double against bottom-club Southampton was required on Friday night. Anything other than a win on Wednesday and their title chances will be blown up in the air.

H2H / Stats

City will take on Arsenal for the third time this season on Wednesday evening. Most recently, Guardiola’s side traveled to the Emirates Stadium in February and left London with three points after a 3-1 win.

Just a month prior, City welcomed Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium for the FA Cup fourth round in a much tighter affair with Nathan Ake’s strike being the difference.

City are on a 13-game winning streak against the Gunners in the Premier League, running back to December 2015 but Arsenal still has more wins against their Wednesday opponents in the overall meetings. In all their duels, Arsenal has 98 wins to City’s 64 with 45 of the games ending in draws.

Recent Meetings:

15/2/23: Arsenal 1-3 Man City

27/1/23: Man City 1-0 Arsenal

1/1/22: Arsenal 1-2 Man City

28/8/21: Man City 5-0 Arsenal

21/2/21: Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Team news

Hosts City has no major injury worries after resting some of their big guns in their weekend FA Cup semifinals win over Sheffield United. The only concern for Pep Guardiola is defender Nathaniel Ake who sat out of the game due to an injury.

Rested players like Kevin De Bruyne, Ederson, Ruben Dias, Rodri, and John Stones are all expected to return to the starting team in the Arsenal visit.

On the visitors, the Gunners will be sweating over the fitness of midfielder Granit Xhaka who sat out Arsenal’s draw with Southampton with illness. William Saliba is highly unlikely to feature as he is still recovering from an injury with the Mikel Arteta side certain that they will be without Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mohamed Elneny.

Probable Line Ups

Man City XI: Ederson; Nathan Ake, Dias, Akanji; Rodri, John Stones; Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Jack Grealish; Haaland.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, White, Holding, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard, Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.

Verdict

Arsenal will have to do everything to avoid defeat if they are to stand a chance in the title race but that can only be a wish going by the ruthlessness of the Pep Guardiola side.

The Gunners have one of the most bright forward in the league this season but will need to sort their rearguard more so if Xhaka won’t be available. The absence of Saliba has exposed their defense too and it remains to be seen how Holding will cope with Erling Haaland who has been scoring for fun.

Arsenal might be leading the league but it’s tough to see how they’ll stop City at the Etihad.

Verdict: Manchester City win

Anytime goal scorers

Erling Haaland

The current Premier League top scorer has been bagging goals left right and center against any opponent. With the support behind him, the Norwegian has been the main man for City this season and would be looking to continue with his scoring streak as they look to bury any dreams of Arsenal winning the league.

Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli is Arsenal’s top scorer this season with 15 goals. The Brazilian has chipped in with vital performances when Gabriel Jesus was out with an injury and chipped in with goals when they were most needed. He might be up against Kyle Walker or John Stones but whoever is tasked with the work of keeping him quiet will have to be on his toes the entire game.

Gabriel Jesus

Jesus will have a chance to prove to City that they were wrong to let him go and will have to be at his best if they are to get something from the Etihad because the chances might be few coming his way. Since he came back from injury, he has continued with his brilliant scoring streak but will need to show up when most needed. He is one player City cant ignore if they are to keep Arsenal silent.

Jack Grealish

The Englishman has been one of the revitalized players under Pep Guardiola after a slow start when he left Aston Villa. He has become a mainstay on City’s left wing and with the right back a position of bother for Arsenal, Grealish will be fancying his chances against Ben White.
