Home » 22/7: Daily Predictions: England takes on Haiti in the Women’s World Cup

Football Predictions

One year after being crowned European champions, England Women will be hoping that they can go a step further by winning the World Cup when they open their campaign against Haiti.

The Lionesses have made it to the semi-finals in each of the past two World Cups, securing a bronze medal in 2015 and finishing fourth last time out, and after a perfect outing in the qualifiers, they will be confident about their chances.  In the group that has Denmark and China too, they are the favorites to finish first.

Haiti are making its World Cup debut, one of eight countries to be appearing at the tournament for the first time this summer. They secured their spot at the World Cup via the CONCACAF W Championship, finishing third in their group to advance to the inter-confederation play-offs. There, Haiti thrashed Senegal 4-0 in their semi-final and then beat Chile 2-1 in the final to join Group D.

H2H/Stats

This will be the first time that the two teams will be meeting in their history.

Team News

Millie Bright, who was handed the captain’s armband in the wake of Williamson’s devastating ACL injury, is expected to start in the heart of defence despite her recent ankle injury. There were questions about her fitness but she took part in a behind-closed-doors warm-up match against Canada on Friday, indicating that she will be fully fit to start against Haiti.

Bright will likely line up in defence alongside Barcelona right-back Lucy Bronze, her Chelsea team-mate Jess Carter and Man City’s Alex Greenwood. Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway are expected to start in midfield, with Ella Toone filling in for Kirby in a slightly more attacking position. Manchester United’s Mary Earps, who was named as The Best Women’s Goalkeeper in the World by Fifa earlier this year is expected to slot in goal in every game of the tournament.

Haiti undeniable best player is 19-year-old Lyon forward Melchie Dumornay. After a youth career propelled her into the spotlight, she is now getting a platform to shine on the biggest stage. Other key players in the team include captain Nerilla Mondesir who plays her club football with Montpellier and Batceheba Louis.

Probable Line Ups

England XI: Earps; Bronze, Morgan, Greenwood, Carter; Walsh, Stanway, Toone; James, Daly, Hemp.

Haiti XI: Theus, Tabita, Limage, Kethna, Surpriss, Dayana, Jeudy, Dumonay, Borgella, Nerilla Mondesir, Batcheba

Verdict

England might have struggled in their warm-up games but the quality at their disposal can’t be compared to what Haiti has. Add that to the fact that they have more experience than their opponents, this is a game they should see off as early as possible.
