20/5 Football Predictions: Race for Europe heats up as Liverpool host Aston Villa

Football Prediction

Liverpool’s push for a top-four finish in the Premier League will continue on Saturday when they host Aston Villa at Anfield.

The Jurgen Klopp side has won each of their last seven league matches to rise into fifth position in the table, only one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United and third-placed Newcastle United however their opponents do have a game in hand.

Unai Emery’s side, meanwhile, will make the trip to Merseyside off the back of a well-deserved 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend. As a result of that victory, the eighth-placed Villians remain firmly in the race to qualify for European competition for the first time since 2010 and they wouldn’t want to miss that chance and believe they can match Liverpool after troubling some of the best teams in the league this season.

H2H/Stats

In their previous meetings, Liverpool has won 101 games in this fixture, 40 games ended in draws with Aston Villa winning 59 games.

Recent Meetings:

26/12/22: Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool

10/5/22: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

11/12/21: Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

8/1/21: Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool

4/10/20: Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool

Team News

Klopp is hopeful Roberto Firmino will be given a run in what might be his last game at Anfield with Darwin Nunez expected to return to the team too after sitting out in the club’s last outing against Leicester. Curtis Jones is expected to start the game after playing a starring role against Leicester.

For Villa, all of Philippe Coutinho, Matty Cash, and Jed Steer all ruled out but Emery has largely a full squad from which to choose.

Probable Line Ups

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Jones; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno; Ramsey, Kamara, Luiz, McGinn; Buendia, Watkins

Verdict

Liverpool’s record over Villa has been impressive in their recent meetings and with a chance still to make it to the Champions League, there is no way they will flounder with such an opportunity as they aim to put pressure on Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Verdict: Liverpool win

Anytime Goalscorer

Mohamed Salah

Salah might not win the golden boot this season owing to Liverpool’s slow start to the campaign but he has been a key figure for the Reds in the league homestretch. The Egyptian would still want to break certain club records and should once again play a key role in the game against Villa.

Ollie Watkins

Watkins has been one of the best Villa players this season and is fighting to be in Gareth Southgate’s England squad now that Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months. He will have to continue scoring goals if he is to be considered.
