21/5: Can Leeds get a result at West Ham to boost their survival hopes?

Home » 21/5: Can Leeds get a result at West Ham to boost their survival hopes?

Football Prediction

Leeds United’s survival hopes take them to London Stadium where Sam Allardyce will be facing his former side West Ham FC.

The Hammers have just qualified for the UEFA Conference league finals after eliminating AZ and with just two games to go to the end of the season, they would want to finish strongly despite coming against a Leeds side who seem rejuvenated under their former boss.

David Moyes’ side still isn’t mathematically safe themselves as they sit just six points ahead of Leeds. But their goal difference is nine better so even if West Ham loses their final two games they will probably still avoid the drop.

Despite impressive outings against Manchester City and Newcastle, Big Sam is winless in his last eight Premier League games against West Ham (D3 L5), having won five in a row before that and has an equally poor record against David Moyes, losing each of his last eight against the Hammers’ boss.

H2H/Stats

It was a tense affair at Elland Road back in January as both clubs battled to gain points and fend off relegation trouble. Marsch’s men broke the deadlock through Gnonto, but goals either side of half-time through Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca saw the traveling Londoners take the lead. Rodrigo bagged an equalizer late on.

Team News

All Declan Rice, Said Benrahma, and Jarrod Bowen are pushing for a start, while Vladimir Coufal is a major doubt. Forward Gianluca Scamacca remains in the recovery room, meaning that Michail Antonio will continue to lead the line for the capital club.

For Leeds, they will have to find a way past the Hammers without Junior Firpo who is banned for the match after receiving his marching orders in the last game, while all Dallas, Sinisterra, and Adams miss out with injuries. Liam Cooper faces a race against the clock to be fit for the game.

Probable Line Ups

West Ham United XI: Fabianski, Cresswell, Aguerd, Zouma, Kehrer, Rice, Soucek, Paqueta, Benrahma, Antonio, Bowen

Leeds United XI: Robles, Ayling, Nissen, Wober, Struijk, McKennie, Koch, Greenwood, Harrison, Bamford, Rodrigo

Verdict

West Ham is virtually safe no matter what happens between now and the end of the season and there is a feeling that David Moyes’s priority now has shifted to the UEFA Conference League final. He wants to keep his players fit for the tie having had a thin squad to deal with for the better part of the campaign and this is where Leeds can capitalize.

Verdict: Leeds win

Anytime Goalscorer

Wilfried Gnonto

The Italian scored against West Ham in the reverse fixture, and the unpredictably creative winger will be hoping to build on his tally to help Leeds to safety.

Michael Antonio

Antonio has been the Hammer’s main man and would want to continue proving his worth for the West Ham faithful who have been patient with them despite a torrid season that has seen them spend the better part in the bottom half of the table.
