Didier Deschamps’ France look to maintain their 100% start to qualification from Group B when they host Ireland having won their opening four matches.
Along with winning all four games, France are also yet to concede a single goal and that could continue this week.
Ireland on the other hand have improved over the last year or so but will still do very well to finish in the top two in this group, even if the Netherlands look to be as inconsistent as ever. The Dutch are up next after this one, so it could be a particularly disappointing week of international football for Irish fans.
Ireland only narrowly lost at home against France back in March and winning at the Parc des Princes will be an even tougher ask of Kenny’s men.
27/3/23: Ireland 0-1 France
28/5/18: France 2-0 Ireland
26/6/16: France 2-1 Ireland
Deschamps has explained that his omission of Paul Pogba is nothing permanent but that the Juventus midfielder needs to get some more minutes on the field before he will be able to help with France’s qualification for the finals in Germany next year. Kimpembe, Badiashile and Diaby are among other players missing from this French squad but there is still plenty of talent in there to get the job done against Ireland.
For Ireland, O’Dowds, Coleman, Brady, Hourihane, Parrott, Obafemi, Johnston, Robinson and Hogan are either injured or have not been called up by coach Kenny this time around.
France XI: Maignan (GK), T. Hernández, Upamecano, Konaté, Koundé, Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Griezmann, Coman, Mbappé, Kolo Muani
Ireland XI: Bazunu (GK), Egan, O’Shea, Collins, McClean, McGrath, Cullen, Smallbone, Knight, Ogbene, Ferguson
France have won five of their last six encounters with the Republic of Ireland. Of their last five wins against Ireland, four have been accompanied by clean sheets. So this should be another routine fixture.
